A local SEO checklist for small businesses
If your customers are nearby, local search can be your most valuable channel. A practical checklist to help people in your area find you on Google and Maps.

When someone searches for "dentist near me" or "bakery in Kadıköy", Google shows a map with a handful of businesses before any regular results. For local businesses, appearing in that map pack is often worth more than ranking for broad, national keywords. Here is a checklist to get the basics right.
Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your profile.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.
- Fill in opening hours, including holidays, and keep them up to date.
- Add real photos of your premises, team and products — and add new ones regularly.
- Write a clear description of what you offer and where.
Consistent name, address and phone
Your business name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, your profile, social media and directory listings. Inconsistencies make it harder for search engines to trust which information is correct.
Reviews
- Ask satisfied customers for a review — a short link or QR code at the counter helps.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones; it breaks platform rules and erodes trust.
Your website
- Show your address, phone and opening hours on every page, usually in the footer.
- Create a page for each service, and a page per location if you have several.
- Embed a map on your contact page.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your details reliably.
- Make sure the site is fast and easy to use on a phone — most local searches happen on mobile.
Local relevance
Mentions from local news sites, associations, suppliers and event pages all signal that you are a real part of the community. Sponsoring a local event or publishing a useful guide about your area can earn these naturally.
Local SEO rewards consistency more than tricks. Keep your information accurate, keep collecting reviews and keep your profile active.
Most of this checklist takes a few hours to set up and a few minutes a week to maintain. For many small businesses, it is the highest-return marketing work they can do.
